American Legion Auxiliary — February 2013
National President’s Message
Each of us belongs to the American Legion Auxiliary because someone we love has served our country with honor. Valentine’s Day presents yet one more opportunity to say “thank you” to our veterans and to those who give them care.
I encourage each of you to visit and volunteer at your local VA Medical Center this Valentine’s Day and to send thank-you cards or valentines to those who have protected our nation. While you’re at it, don’t forget to leave a valentine or happy note at the nurses’ station — they deserve our love and support too.
I know our veterans would be especially thrilled if you could spend a few minutes visiting and talking about their families, their hometowns, or maybe even their favorite football team. And of course, don’t forget to tell them how much you appreciate their service.
To our Junior Activities chairmen, you have always been wonderfully supportive in encouraging our Junior members to reach out to our veterans at this time of year. I know our veterans appreciate the creative handmade and red, white, and blue valentines. Valentine’s Day is a great time to help Junior members express their creativity while learning the satisfaction of serving our veterans.
If you do not live close enough to a VA facility to drop off your valentines in person, be sure to plan ahead and put them in the mail or collect them at your Legion post and have one member drop or mail them together. We can never repay our courageous veterans for the sacrifices they have made on our behalf, but we can take the time to let them know how much we appreciate them.
Please show your love for our country and our veterans by remembering those who have served us this Valentine’s Day — especially those veterans who make you eligible for ALA membership. It’s a small act that costs so little and means so much to our treasured veterans.
Yours in continued service to our veterans and military families,
