TYLA and DAYL Host Diversity Dinner On Jan. 12, the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) and the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers (DAYL) hosted “Creating a Culture of Inclusion,” a dinner event dedicated to promoting diversity. The dinner, which took place at the City Club in Dallas, featured New York Times best-selling author of Same Kind of Different as Me Ron Hall and a panel discussion about diversity in the legal profession. Hall’s book was a recent selection in the State Bar’s staff book club, and staff members Dani Dukes, Lydia Garcia, and Dan Turner attended the dinner for their participation in the book club discussion. The diversity panel was composed of Robert Jones, Jr. of American Airlines, Inc. and Felicity Fowler of Haynes and Boone, L.L.P. and was moderated by Dallas County Criminal Court Judge Roberto Cañas. JUDGE ROYAL FURGESON NAMED DEAN OF NEW LAW SCHOOL Senior U.S. District Court Judge Royal Furgeson, Jr. has been named dean of the forthcoming University of North Texas at Dallas College of Law. Furgeson will remain on the bench for 15 months before beginning his tenure as dean in April 2013. The law school, which was authorized by the Texas Legislature in 2009, is expected to open in August 2014. GODBEY RECEIVES SCHOENBRUN AWARD Beverly Godbey, a partner in Gardere, Wynne, Sewell, L.L.P. and chair of the State Bar Board of Directors, is the recipient of the 2011 Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Larry Schoenbrun Jurisprudence Award. The accolade, presented by the ADL’s North Texas/Oklahoma Regional Office, recognizes legal professionals who demonstrate a devotion to the principles enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and the democratic values that characterize the United States. Harriet Miers, a former recipient of the award, chaired a luncheon in Godbey’s honor on Dec. 16, 2011. Godbey, shown above with her daughter Ruth, is the 22nd recipient of the award.
