The Texas Young Lawyers Association Board of Directors approved the nominations of Kristy Sims Piazza of Plano and Shivali Sharma of Texarkana as 2012–2013 president-elect candidates. This year, nominees for president-elect are from non-metropolitan cities. Biographies of the candidates, in alphabetical order, are included here. An interview with the two candidates will be included in the April issue. Votes for TYLA president-elect and district directors can be cast either via paper ballot or by voting online from April 2 to May 1. On April 2, attorneys eligible to vote will be mailed an election packet, including a paper ballot. Attorneys may either submit their paper ballot via mail or vote online using the information provided. The deadline to cast ballots is 5 p.m. CST on May 1. Kristy Sims Piazza Plano Kristy Sims Piazza is an associate of KoonsFuller, P.C., where she practices family law. She has served on the TYLA board since 2008. Piazza currently serves as TYLA vice president and served as secretary in 2010–11. She has also served as vice chair and co-chair on a number of TYLA committees. She was instrumental in the development and production of Healing the Wounds, The Little Voice, and Breaking the Silence. She co-authored What to Expect in Texas Family Court, the Pro Se Divorce Handbook, How to Obtain a Texas Protective Order, and the Child Protective Services Handbook. Piazza received a President’s Award of Merit in 2009. She serves on the board of the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers and the Collin County Bench Bar Foundation. She also served as chair of the Collin County Bench Bar Conference and as director and secretary of the Collin County Young Lawyers Association. She was honored by the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program as one of its most active pro bono attorneys in 2011. Piazza received her J.D. from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law and her B.A. from the University of North Texas. Shivali Sharma Texarkana Shivali Sharma serves as a permanent staff attorney for the Sixth Court of Appeals in Texarkana, where she handles a variety of complex appellate issues. She has served on the TYLA board since 2009. Sharma has served as vice chair or co-chair of several TYLA committees. She drafted the 2012 State Moot Court problem, was instrumental in creating Turning Points/Search and Seizure, edited for TYLA eNews, created presentations for Seniors and the Law and Legal Guide for Cancer Patients, and presented TYLA’s lawfocused education programs. She co-authored the Loan Modification Scam Pamphlet, Resources for Veterans Seeking Help, and Helpful Resources for Court Clerks. Sharma received the 2011 TYLA Joseph M. Pritchard Inn Outstanding Director of the Year Award and the 2009 Arkansas Bar Association’s Lawyer Community Legacy Award. In the 2008–09 bar year, Sharma served as president of the Texarkana Young Lawyers Association. She is currently on the House of Delegates of the Arkansas Bar Association. Sharma received her J.D. from Baylor Law School and her B.A. from the University of Central Florida.
