BAYLOR LAW STUDENTS SWEEP NTC HONORS Teams from Baylor Law School swept both firstand second-place at the 37th annual National Trial Competition (NTC) finals on March 24 in Austin. The Texas Young Lawyers Association partnered with the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) to host the event. In the final round, the team of Mark Walraven and Steven Lopez bested the team of Joel Towner and Chaille Graft Walraven. Mark Walraven also received Best Advocate honors. The Baylor teams are coached by Robert Little, a Baylor adjunct professor and attorney at Naman, Howell, Smith & Lee, P.L.L.C. in Waco. ABA HONORS TAJF DIRECTOR, TEXAS SUPREME COURT The American Bar Association presented Texas Access to Justice Foundation Executive Director Betty Balli Torres and members of the Texas Supreme Court with 2012 ABA Grassroots Advocacy Awards at an April 18 reception at the U.S. Supreme Court. Balli Torres was recognized for her efforts in securing legal aid funding and ensuring access to justice for lowincome Americans. The Texas Supreme Court was honored for its key role in obtaining funding for legal services during the last legislative session. STANDING OVATION FOR CLE VOLUNTEERS Six Texas attorneys were recently honored by the State Bar for their contributions in 2011 to the Bar’s continuing legal education efforts. John G. Browning of Dallas, Clyde “Jay” Jackson of Houston, Mark McPherson of Dallas, Sarah Pacheco of Houston, Scott Rothenberg of Houston, and D. Hull Youngblood of San Antonio each received a Standing Ovation Award from the staff of TexasBarCLE. GIULIANI TO ADDRESS HEMPHILL DINNER Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will be the keynote speaker at the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society’s John Hemphill Dinner on June 1 in Austin. The program also will include the presentation of the fourth annual Chief Justice Jack Pope Professionalism Awards. In conjunction with the dinner, a portrait dedication honoring former Justice Harriet O’Neill will take place at 3 p.m. in the Supreme Court Courtroom. Hutchison Honored for Support of Legal Services On April 17, U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas was honored by the American Bar Association (ABA) with its 2012 ABA Congressional Justice Award.
