The Wonders of Watermelon If your operation is participating in a summer feeding program, your customers probably love any menu item that helps them to keep cool under the hot, intense rays of the sun. Is it any wonder that thoughts quickly turn to watermelon as the ideal healthy refresher? But in honor of July’s National Watermelon Month, why not change up how you serve this classic treat by taking some inspiration from the kid-friendly recipes (like the one pictured here) offered by the National Watermelon Promotion Board? Of course, don’t forget to serve up a few, fun, summertime facts, while you’re at it! For example, your students might be curious to know where the expression “dog days of summer” originates. (It’s related to the rising of Sirius, the Dog Star, which is visible in our skies only during the height of summer.)
