A Celebration With Sizzle Kick off fall with a series of cafeteria promotions to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15). Whether your school’s enrollment includes students from this demographic, the U.S. Census Bureau finds this to be the fastest-growing minority group in the country—and Mexican and Latin American dishes certainly are among the most popular ethnic foods served in schools! So, celebrate with decorations, activities and new menu items. Hang flags from such countries as Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico and Spain around the cafeteria. Invite parents to join their children for a Hispanic-influenced breakfast or lunch. Try out new Latin recipes, using this month as the perfect opportunity to conduct taste tests with your students. Partner with teachers about how the cafeteria can help them promote this year’s theme: “Many Backgrounds, Many Stories…One American Spirit.” Use your web browser to find a wide variety of Internet resources for celebration ideas and activities.
