Reign of the Rainforest Since most Western Hemisphere rainforests are located in tropical locations (excepting patches of temperate rainforests in the Appalachian Mountains and British Columbia), your students may not be familiar with the essential role they play in the life of our planet—nor may they be aware of the rapidity in which they are being destroyed! Use World Rainforest Week, October 12-18, to collaborate with classroom teachers and share rainforest-related facts with kids. For example, these forests are vital for absorbing carbon dioxide, producing oxygen and rainfall and stabilizing our climate. Also, more than half of all plant and animal species make their home in rainforests.
