Have you pledged to take on the STEPS Challenge? This personal wellness program sponsored by SNA and Jennie-O Turkey Store is just the ticket if you are seeking an approach that is completely customizable to your individual needs. In our busy, busy lives, STEPS participation can be a challenge, but most things that are worthwhile require a commitment and some effort, right? I know that commitment wasn’t always easy for the faithful few members who joined me for an early morning walk each day during SNA’s Fall Committee Days. But it was a beautiful setting and a great way to wake up and prepare to face the day with a fresh attitude. During Committee Days, I saw the STEPS Challenge approach—setting goals, tracking progress, embracing new habits, etc.—in action in various ways. Board and committee members set goals using the charges provided to them by the Annual Plan. They tracked progress over the course of their two days of hard work. They embraced the new, promoted what they were doing and, best of all, shared their success at the end each gathering. I am so impressed at the level of thoughtful work and committed dedication shown by SNA’s national volunteers. We have many new ideas taking shape and work is progressing toward achieving the goals we set for this year. As the holidays near, I intend to step up my focus on using the principles of the STEPS Challenge. After all, there are so many outside influences and variables that we cannot control during this time; that’s why STEPS is so helpful, because it allows us to take charge of what we can. I will have two weeks at home, using this time to recharge my battery and get ready for the new year. I plan to focus on exercise even more, incorporating it into my daily routine. And I will focus on celebrating my success, too! December is college football’s “bowl” month—a true favorite of mine, especially this year, with Kansas State currently at the top! I also love this period to reflect on all the blessings we enjoy. Friends across the country. A great career. A healthy family. What else will you add to the list this year? What makes you truly happy? It’s not too early to look ahead—I hope to see many of you at SNA’s Legislative Action Conference in Washington in March. Last month’s election will bring both new challenges and new opportunities for our programs. This will be a great time to get together to work in the pursuit of amazing results. Let’s take STEPS toward the close of a rewarding 2012 and the start of a fantastic 2013!
