Celebrating MILESTONES THIS ISSUE OF THE TEXAS BAR JOURNAL marks two important milestones in the history of the magazine. The first is the beginning of a yearlong celebration of the Texas Bar Journal’s 75th anniversary. Since January 1938, the Texas Bar Journal has been exploring major topics facing our profession, and is the source for insightful legal articles, news about the State Bar of Texas, features on Texas lawyers, and much more. Interestingly, the magazine published its first issue more than a year before the State Bar of Texas was formally created in April 1939. To commemorate the magazine’s anniversary, each issue in 2013 will feature a “retro” article from years past, which will provide a glimpse at issues lawyers were confronting at that particular time. Also, the July Texas Bar Journal will be dedicated to celebrating this special anniversary of the magazine. Second, as you will notice, the current issue debuts the redesign of the magazine, creating a more reader-friendly publication with enhanced visuals that unite the layout, including photos, artwork, infographics, and bold captions and pull quotes. The redesign also features font style and size changes, related elements grouped with boxes and borders, lines separating columns or information, and a cleaner look with more white space on the inside pages. On the cover, readers will notice enhanced visuals and feature story callouts, which highlight content inside the magazine. We believe the end result of this redesign is a magazine with a fresh identity and, most importantly, one that provides an enjoyable reading experience. Throughout the years, the Texas Bar Journal has evolved to meet the changing needs of our profession and technological advances, but at the same time, the magazine has remained true to its roots of bringing us together as lawyers. The Texas Bar Journal is the only magazine mailed to every licensed lawyer in Texas as part of his or her membership dues. I am privileged to serve on the Board of Editors with a remarkable group of dedicated lawyers from diverse geographic and practice areas. We are fortunate to be charged with setting the magazine’s editorial direction, coordinating special issues, identifying authors, and contributing articles ourselves. I’d like to also thank our wonderful article writers who contribute their time and talents to this magazine so that we all can benefit from their wisdom and insight. Just this past year, we have tackled topics ranging from human trafficking to the state of our profession and jury service. In coming months, you will see the same in-depth coverage of issues, such as the graying of the profession, oil and gas, and mentoring. We will also continue to highlight and showcase the great work of the Texas Young Lawyers Association, which continues to produce projects that benefit the public and our profession. We appreciate your continued loyal readership and encourage your feedback on ways to make the magazine even better. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. MICHAEL C.
