A Few of My Favorite Things Here I am, already through more than half of my year as president, and I can’t help but reflect on all the many things that I have loved about my journey from the day I first joined right through to today. While Maria from “The Sound of Music” might prefer “raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,” the following are a few of my favorite things about being a member and a leader of SNA. The People. I love networking. SNA provides so many opportunities to learn from one another. There is not a meeting where I don’t take away some valuable new idea or innovation. Mentoring also is a favorite. I love being a servant leader, one who helps others learn and grow. I enjoy helping people to see their opportunities and to stretch to reach new potential. And, of course, my friendships. I am so excited to know someone in school nutrition from every single state in the nation! And as president, I have been able to visit many of them on their home turf. Opportunities for Growth. I grow as a leader every day, and the skills that enable me to do this job came from my involvement all along the way. They came from saying yes,” even when I didn’t think I was qualified. But jumping in gave me the experience and confidence to succeed—and then to move on to the next leadership opportunity. One particular standout was serving as president of the Kansas state affiliate. It helped me to grow in my career, leading to a position as a district director in Kansas and now in Florida. And then there’s the Annual National Conference (ANC)! This amazing event allows us to share our stories, discover new solutions and partner with new allies, especially industry. I love walking through the Exhibit Hall to see all the new products and attending education sessions to learn from my colleagues. This year’s ANC will be in “the heart of the nation”: Kansas City, Mo., July 14-17. Kansas City is lively and fun and has so much to offer. And the ANC program is terrific: Al Roker. Lisa Ling. Darius Rucker. Don’t delay in taking advantage of the Early Bird registration rate savings! Check out the details at www.school nutrition.org/anc. Personal Passions. If you’ve been reading my columns this year, you know that I love the STEPS Challenge. It is such a fantastic program that gives me the accountability and tools to tackle my personal wellness goals in a way that is right for me! And finally, there is my absolute joy in what we do. Sharing a love for this profession with 55,000 others who have the same mission, vision and values is such personal motivation each and every day. How about you?
