May is traditionally a busy time for American Legion Auxiliary members, and one of the many times throughout the year that I feel so proud to be a member of this great organization. It warms my heart to see hardworking Auxiliary members working side-by-side with our Juniors distributing poppies — knowing that with each flower they present, they are reminding others in their communities of the tremendous service and sacrifice of America’s veterans. Our presence and participation at memorial services and meaningful efforts placing flowers, wreaths, and flags on the graves of our veterans is also a labor of love. While we are in the midst of performing these many honorable works, it’s so important that we work to help others in our families and communities reflect on what Memorial Day is all about — paying tribute to our fallen heroes. No words can ever bring back loved ones who lost their lives in service, and no ceremony can do justice to their memory. But on Memorial Day, it is so important to let the families left behind know that they are not alone, for they have served us too. Be sure as you honor their loved ones that you also honor their service and offer them thanks. This Memorial Day, as we reverently remember our veterans, I challenge you to also remember why you joined this organization… and to share that sentiment with others, encouraging them to join us in serving our veterans who have so selflessly served us. With thousands of veterans still returning from overseas combat, our help is needed more than ever. And we need more members to join us in giving them the support they need and the respect they deserve. Yours in continued service to our veterans and military families, Peggy Thomas National President
