American Legion Auxiliary - May 2013
Behind the Scenes
NOTES FROM THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Simplifying to Better Serve = Collective Big Impact At the Medal of Honor Ball following the U.S. Presidential Inauguration, Vice President Joe Biden introduced his family on The American Legion dais. Afterward, I shared with him the American Legion Auxiliary’s gratitude for his two sons’ service in the Army National Guard and Navy Reserve plus Dr. Jill Biden’s role as a military mom. He put one hand on my shoulder, looked me straight in the eye, then said emphatically, “I know who does all the work; believe me, I know how important you gals are. You make a huge difference for our troops and veterans. It’s me who needs to thank YOU!” Powerful kudos, ALA! Making a big impact means being compassionate, resourceful, and organized. At National Headquarters, we understand: Simpler is better. Our mission of service requires well-informed members and topnotch materials. Consistent branding simplifies and amplifies our message. We listen when members ask for more and better user-friendly resources. So, have you noticed what’s new? Have you checked out the ALAforVeterans.org website recently? It now has a more user-friendly design. Navigating is simpler. We have emphasized our American Legion Auxiliary brand and are adding even more branded resources. We added a user form to submit questions to National Headquarters right from the website, removing the search-for-the-correct- email-address step. National Headquarters’ Twitter feed and social media links appear throughout. The “Upcoming Meeting” calendar is right on the homepage, along with a news ticker. Veterans and Military Families Services is prominent under the Resources header. And every webpage now boasts an ALA testimonial. Pretty cool. You’ll also notice this issue of Auxiliary has a refreshed look, with a friendlier-on- the-eyes typeface and updated design. We emboldened National News and “good works” by Auxiliary units and members, added quick-read news briefs, and a “how-to” feature that simply describes how we do some of our meaningful ceremonies and mission outreach. We matter because of who we are and what we do… simply…with impact!
