One “Starfish” at a Time Not long ago, I received my monthly “nudge” e-mail reminding me that my next—and final— column for this magazine was coming due. I promptly lost the e-mail! I believe it was because I was not ready to face the fact that a year has flown by so quickly. What an amazing journey, full of opportunities I could not have dreamed possible and memories that I’m confident will never fade. What a “transforming” year it has been! Indeed, my little Autobot Transformer companion is looking a little road weary; he has traveled to many places and met many people. I bet you will be surprised at all that your Association accomplished this year! Did you know that… ■ …we had record-breaking attendance at both the Child Nutrition Industry Conference and the Legislative Action Conference? The numbers look good for our Annual National Conference in July. Thanks to the many staffand volunteers who work to make the programing so dynamic. ■ …our national committees met all their charges? Volunteers make great decisions and produce great results. ■ …we reached more than 15 million people through our numerous public awareness efforts? Many news reports about school nutrition programs conveyed our messages. Thank you to all who helped to contribute content and to the SNA staff, who make simple words sound like a sonnet. ■ …our then-acting (now official) CEO took over the reins last November without hesitation and without skipping a beat? She guided us through turbulent waters, and now has begun charting an exciting course forward. I predict smooth sailing ahead! ■ …SNA and its positions were represented during the highest-level discussions of foods and professional standards? Your voices were heard. ■ …SNA has an exciting plan to partner with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Food Service Management Institute? We’ll maximize resources to provide you with the tools you need to do your jobs. ■ …more than 3,000 of us have participated in the STEPS Challenge to improve our health and wellness? I’m so proud of our shared commitment! And there are so many other achievements. Pick up any magazine from the last year and you see—SNA is at work for you. I am reminded of the story I shared in the November 2012 column about the boy “making a difference” to each individual starfish he rescued from the beach and threw back into the ocean. I hope I have made a difference for some of you, the “stars” of SNA. You certainly have made a difference in my life. Thank you for all your support in transforming school nutrition.
