Fresh From the Farm Have you been enjoying fresh produce from a local farmers’ market throughout the summer months? August is the height of harvest time for many crops, which is why August 3-9 has been designated National Farmers’ Market Week! While patronizing the farmers’ market for your own grocery needs, consider using your errand as an opportunity to take a moment to speak to the participating farmers about how they might support your school nutrition operation in a farm-to-school initiative. Where to start? Of the more than 4,300 school districts that responded to a U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm to School Census, 78% buy fruit, followed by vegetables (75%), fluid milk (37%), baked goods (22%) and dairy products other than milk (18%) from local growers, dairies and vendors.
