Foundation provides grants for veteran legal services The Texas Access to Justice Foundation has announced that it will give more than $426,000 in grants to 11 nonprofits in support of legal aid services for Texas veterans. TAJF is the largest state-based funding source for the provision of civil legal aid in Texas. Dallas event celebrates diversity in the profession On Sept. 25, the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association hosted its annual fundraiser and awards reception, “Lighting the Path to the Legal Profession,” at the Tower Club Dallas to recognize efforts to support education and diversity within the legal community. Houston firm trains first-year lawyers For the third consecutive year, Andrews Kurth partnered with the Fullbridge Program to provide new associates with three weeks of intensive business-education coaching on concepts such as valuation, financial analysis, and project management. People’s Law School teacher legal basics Lawyers, judges, and professors volunteered to teach courses in 14 areas of law to members of the public during a People’s Law School seminar at the University of Houston Law Center on Oct. 4. Attendees were encouraged to take three free classes on topics ranging from wills and estates to consumer law, and they received corresponding written material at the end of the day. Agosto elected as head of national fund Benny Agosto Jr., a partner in the Houston office of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend, was named president of the Hispanic National Bar Association Legal Education Fund, which promotes educational programs that expose underrepresented students and professionals to opportunities in the legal profession. Among other initiatives, the fund provides law student scholarships, community outreach programming, and a law camp for high school students.
