School nutrition professionals know the difference that school breakfast makes for the students who participate. But have you taken the time to share its importance with parents, administrators, the media and others in your community? Making the connection between eating a nutritious breakfast at school and academic achievements— not to mention improved behavior, school attendance and more—is a vital message to share when conveying the value of school breakfast and seeking the support of stakeholders who can assist you and your team in your efforts to boost morning participation. With this in mind, SNA and campaign partner Kellogg’s Food Away From Home encourage you pull out all the stops and celebrate National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) 2015: “Make the Grade With School Breakfast.” While any time of year is a good time to share these messages with stakeholders and students alike, NSBW, taking place March 2-6, 2015, is a phenomenal opportunity to communicate critical key messages. To prepare for your spring celebration, explore the wide range of resources SNA offers to help ensure an A+ “Make the Grade With School Breakfast” celebration! Prepare for Success Visit the official website at www.schoolnutrition.org/nsbw for tips, tricks and tools that will save you time and offer valuable ideas as you plan your school breakfast celebration. On the website, you’ll find menuing tips—plus celebration ideas, activity sheets, banner ads for school websites and, of course, official logos and artwork. Also available online is a backpack brochure to distribute to families in your community. It features information about healthy school breakfast directed to parents. Download and print it at your school, or order pre-printed color versions of the brochure from SNA’s Emporium in packs of 100 (you pay only shipping costs). To help you and your team really embrace the NSBW spirit, you can purchase specialty items like themed aprons, T-shirts, balloons, posters, buttons and more. Spread the Word Let the local media and the surrounding community know about the difference that school breakfast makes for K-12 students. An online toolkit available at www.schoolnutrition.org/nsbw features key findings from recent research about the benefits of school breakfast, and of course, you can include details about the positive impact you’ve seen at the local level. Use your district’s or school nutrition operation’s Facebook page to spread the word—check out the NSBW Facebook cover photo that you can upload—and then invite the local media representatives to attend any specific events you have on the calendar. SNA offers a sample NSBW press release to help you secure such media coverage. Simply download and fill in your own details! Visit www.schoolnutrition.org/nsbw or call SNA Headquarters for further media support information at (800) 877-8822. If prompted, your students likely can attest to the jumpstart that school breakfast provides: It takes them from sleepy to superenergized and from cranky to creative! Capture these testimonials artistically by promoting SNA’s “Before & After School Breakfast” student art contest. This contest encourages kids to illustrate how eating a healthy school breakfast makes them feel—and the difference that it makes! Three national winners will receive prize packs from SNA. Find complete contest rules and entry forms at www.schoolnutrition.org/nsbw. Official, school-submitted entries (limited to three per school) are due to SNA Headquarters by March 31, 2015.
