Pursuant to the bylaws of the Texas Young Lawyers Association, the membership of TYLA will choose a president- elect and 17 directors in April. Regular members of TYLA include every licensed Texas attorney who is 36 years old or younger as of June 1 of each year or attorneys within their initial 60-month licensing period as of June 1. Regular members are eligible to hold office and vote for president-elect and director or directors of their district. President-elect Nominations and Balloting This year, nominees for president-elect must come from districts encompassing the cities of Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, or San Antonio. One does not have to be an officer or director to be nominated for president-elect. Any regular member in good standing who is from any district encompassing one of the abovereferenced cities is eligible. Nominations for president-elect may be made by written petition, signed by at least 500 TYLA members in good standing, and filed with the executive director of the State Bar of Texas on or before March 2. A petition form may be obtained from the Texas Young Lawyers Association, P.O. Box 12487, Austin, TX, 78711-2487 or by calling (512) 427-1529 or (800) 204-2222, ext. 1529. The president-elect serves on the TYLA Board of Directors and Executive Committee, is a voting member of the State Bar Board of Directors, and serves on the State Bar Executive Committee. The president-elect serves one year and assumes the office of president immediately upon the adjournment of the annual meeting held at the close of his or her term as president-elect. Directors’ Nominations and Balloting Districts, as outlined in the bylaws, are represented on the TYLA board by elected directors. This year, directors will be elected to represent the 17 odd-numbered districts and odd-numbered places within districts. Nominations for director candidates must be made by written petition, signed by at least 5 percent or 100 members whose principal place of business is in the district, whichever is less, and filed with the executive director of the State Bar of Texas on or before March 2. A listing of the districts up for election this year is included on the following page. Each director candidate must have his or her principal place of business within the district for which he or she is nominated. Each director is elected to serve a twoyear term and is limited to two such terms as director. It is the duty of a director to represent his or her district at all TYLA board meetings; to attend the annual meeting of the membership; to be an active representative of the association within his or her district; to advise the board of local needs and programs being conducted within his or her district; to carry out assigned committee responsibilities; to promote association programs in his or her district; and to perform such duties as the president, executive committee, or board may direct. An orientation will be conducted for newly elected directors in June. Remember to Vote Official ballots will be distributed on April 1. If your principal place of business is in one of the districts where a director will be elected, your ballot will include nominees for president-elect and the director position. If you are in a district where no director is up for election, your ballot will have only the president-elect nominees. TYLA should be representative of all young lawyers in Texas. This is only possible if you nominate and vote for a president-elect and director of your choice.
