Steppin’ Out The average American walks approximately 5,900 steps a day, which is about 4,000 steps fewer than the oft-cited recommendation of 10,000 steps—or about 5 miles—per day. While that number isn’t an official recommendation (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of weekly activity), there’s no arguing that taking more steps every day is a boon to your health. Take advantage of the longer hours and warmer weather that summer brings by heading outdoors to get in these “movingmore” benchmarks. Take a post-dinner walk with your family; ask a coworker to join you for a break-time stroll; or hold a “moving meeting” that gets everyone in the department stepping together. You’ll be impressed at how quickly the steps add up!
