Along with utilizing her expertise in optical office design, Barbara Wright worked closely with Bergeron to ensure the interior of the office also reflected the A. Hays Town style. “Translating the gorgeous look of hand-hewn wood, brick and plaster interiors into a functional and affordable modern office was no easy task,” says Wright. “Our challenge was to look at homes from 40 years ago when things didn’t cost what they cost now and determine how to make these elements work for an optometry office.” Both Wright and Dr. Cowan agreed the signature features of A. Dr. Cowan also agrees that the drive- through has been a big hit among his patient base because it shows his appreciation for their busy lifestyles. Since the new office opened, the optometrist reports an increase of 25 percent over last year’s earnings. “Probably even more,” he adds. “And that’s in the midst of a recession and new competition.” Employee morale has played a large part in the success of Dr. Cowan’s new office. Wright tells all her clients, “When you remodel, you’re doing it just as much for the staff as for the patients. It’s a big motivator to work in a beautiful building.” Continued on page 59 February 2010 20/20 • 57
