Seven things you didn’t know you didn’t know about SNA webinars. Once upon a time, adult learners had three primary options to advance their education: in-person classes/workshops, correspondence courses and self-study. The Internet changed that, providing opportunities for distance learning. In the last 20 years, technological advances have allowed such opportunities to virtually explode, offering students ever-easier access and ever-greater variety. Enter the web-based seminar, or webinar. Using Internet software, trainers can share real-time audio, video, photos, documents and other tools with attendees in locations all across the globe. They, in turn, can ask questions of the speakers. For SNA, webinars have transformed the Association’s ability to provide its members with critical training and professional development, as well as enhancing the sharing of best practice strategies and solutions. As the federal Professional Standards regulation goes into its second year, there’s never been a more critical time for you to explore SNA webinar programs. 1) SNA’s Webinars Are Free! There is no cost to attend SNA webinars. How many other training providers can make that happen over and over, multiple times each month? Whether you participate by yourself or gather a group together to watch on a large-screen monitor or via an LCD projector, it’s still free, free, free! (And if you are a member of the national Association, you can access the Webinars On-Demand library anytime, anywhere. More on this benefit in a bit.) 2) No Fancy Equipment Webinar participation doesn’t require fancy equipment. All you need is a computer with an Internet connection (high-speed service such as DSL or cable works best). On the go? You can use your mobile device, if you have the data and bandwidth. Audio speakers are helpful, but you may use a headset, if you choose. You also can listen to the audio portion of the webinar by calling the phone number you will receive in your registration confirmation email. 3) Real Time/Ask Questions When participating in real time, you will have an opportunity to ask questions. Confused by a particular piece of information? Need clarification? Want details not covered in the presentation? Simply “raise your hand.” That is, use the “question box” on the webinar control panel to type in your question, and the moderator will pass it along to the speaker(s). Just as with an in-person lecture, there will be certain opportunities either during or at the end of the session for questions, and the moderator and speaker will try to accommodate as many as possible within the time limit. The vast majority of speakers provide contact information at the end of the webinar, so you can reach out to make contact offline as desired. 4) Professional Standards Training and CEU Hours All of the webinars offered in SNA’s Webinar Wednesdays™ series provide 1 hour of Professionals Standards training, provided to participants as 1 SNA CEU, which can be used toward SNA’s Certificate and Credentialing Programs. Your participation in the webinar, along with the successful completion of a post-webinar quiz, earns you the CEU. The Proof of Attendance document can be printed or saved at the conclusion of the quiz and should be added to your training documentation file. Note: Webinars on topics not aligned to the Professional Standards Key Areas or that are less than an hour in duration do not qualify for 1 CEU/1-hour training. 5) On-Demand and Convenient Webinars On-Demand offer even more convenience. SNA understands that your time is at a premium and that our webinar schedule may not always fit yours. That’s why we’ve created Webinars On-Demand as an important members-only resource. If weekends and evenings—or even mid-afternoons on the West coast—present a better time for you to devote to your personal education goals, you can still take advantage of this great professional development resource. Each on-demand webinar includes the recorded live webinar for you to download and review, a PDF of the slides and any handouts. You must login on SchoolNutrition.org to access all on-demand webinars. 6) Sessions in Four Key Areas Webinars On-Demand feature sessions in each of the four Key Areas. Why turn to SNA webinars when working toward your SNA Certificate in School Nutrition or meeting the prescribed number of training hours needed to meet the Professional Standards requirement? The variety! Our webinar archives feature 39—and counting—sessions. Here is just a brief sampling: • NUTRITION: Webinars on Smart Snacks, whole grains and meal pattern flexibilities. • OPERATIONS: Webinars on food safety, working with whole-grain pasta and food allergy management. • ADMINISTRATION: Webinars on ethics, CEP, unpaid meal charges and produce procurement. • COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING: Webinars on media training, online branding and presentation techniques. What are you waiting for? Check out the entire list at www.schoolnutrition.org/webinar/on-demand! 7) Make the Most of Your SNA Membership Learn about making the most of your SNA membership. When you participate in the webinars in the Talk Tuesdays™ series, you can learn how to take advantage of the benefits that are available to you. For starters, only SNA members can access the Webinars On-Demand library! There, you can access past sessions on SNA awards, SNF scholarships, becoming an advocacy pro, managing your state or local chapter association board, recruiting tips and more. Look for others to be scheduled. Note that the webinars in this series are not eligible for CEUs/Professional Standards training hours. Visit www.schoolnutrition.org/webinars to learn about upcoming Webinar Wednesdays™ and Talk Tuesdays™ offerings. Webinars are always held at 2 p.m. ET. Registration is easy and you’ll also find instructions for dealing with technological difficulties.
