Promoting a Very Positive Procurement Partnership I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I AM ALWAYS GLAD WHEN SCHOOL HAS BEEN OPEN FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS and life settles into a predictable ebb and flow. Don’t get me wrong—I like change and look forward to new challenges. In fact, while opening school for a new year can sap one’s energy, it also energizes! But this year, I have been sleep-deprived in watching coverage of the political conventions and the Olympics! So, I’m ready for a little routine. I know our industry partners must feel the same way—they have worked tirelessly to get new products into the marketplace so that we can serve nutritious foods to our children from Day One. If you stop to think about the many steps a food product travels from farm to plate, it is pretty amazing, isn’t it? That’s why I’d like to take advantage of this column to thank all those hardworking vendors who make our jobs possible and who stay in the school market despite complex procurement rules, tight margins and nutrition standards. Thank you for going above and beyond on behalf of the children of our nation. I mentioned complex procurement rules, and no one knows better than we do that the system needs more simplification and efficiency. This is why SNA convened the Procurement Task Force last fall. I was honored to chair this group of members from all segments of our business. Our deep dive into procurement challenges and opportunities led to the development of more procurement-focused training at SNA meetings, as well as a “white paper” report on our findings. That report is expected to be available online later this month, and you can read a preview on page 24. Continuing to move our work forward, SNA will call a new task force together this fall to explore ethics in procurement under the leadership of President-elect Dr. Lynn Harvey. Another outgrowth of the Procurement Task Force is the development of an upcoming ethics training series called “What Should You Do?” As the steady pace of another year falls into place, I thank each of you for demonstrating your passion each day and for seeking opportunities to do your very best for our children. Together, we provide meals that meet the highest standards and are served with that extra pinch of love for which we are famous.
