Rally for Renewed and Refreshed Advocacy THE PARTISANSHIP OF THIS YEAR’S NATIONAL ELECTION SEASON HAS PROMPTED MANY VOTERS TO THROW THEIR HANDS UP IN DISGUST. Although most Americans are frustrated with the constant squabbling, SNA and its members must remain engaged in the political process. In January, a new Administration and a new Congress will take office, and the decisions these officials make in the coming months will have a lasting impact on school meal programs, school nutrition professionals and the children you serve. Among these actions: Congress is poised to complete its long-overdue work on Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) and draft a new Farm Bill, which will be a critical opportunity to expand USDA Foods to support school breakfast. As stewards of our government’s most consequential nutrition programs, it is our job to educate these officials. Our public servants need to understand how school meal programs really work, why they are critical to America’s future and how Congress can help ensure these programs succeed in their mission. They need to hear from SNA members working on the frontlines every day. Given Washington gridlock, it may be tempting to sit on the sidelines—after all, Congress just spent the last year debating CNR at a snail’s pace, with school nutrition professionals in desperate need of the remedies this legislation could provide. But we can’t afford complacency, and SNA needs your help. As part of our Strategic Plan, SNA has centralized its lobbying and legislative activities to better serve SNA members. Working with the Public Policy and Legislation Committee (PPL), SNA staff are constantly up on Capitol Hill, partnering with allied groups, meeting with Members of Congress and educating their staff on your programs and how they can support the vital work you are doing. While it’s frustrating that Congress has not passed CNR, we are making progress. With each Congressional meeting and correspondence, and with every Action Alert sent, we are laying the groundwork for a strong CNR and Farm Bill. In the coming months, PPL will solicit your input to draft the 2017 Position Paper. Be on the lookout for opportunities to participate in the political process by sharing your stories. With your help, SNA will maintain the drumbeat during the lame duck session through the end of 2016. We will hit the ground running in January to educate every new and returning Member of Congress on the importance of school nutrition programs.
