Charity starts at “home,” as your SNF contributions, in any amount, establish a solid “foundation” for the future of school nutrition. While so many school nutrition professionals give their time, treasure and talents to others all year long, it’s likely that you, along with most Americans, get particularly caught up in the spirit of giving even more during November and December. You open your hearts, homes and wallets to family, friends and strangers. Generosity is the name of your game. Will you show a little of that altruism toward your profession before the end of 2016? For more than 50 years, the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) has been educating and empowering the women and men who provide healthy nourishment to school children. Since 1964, SNA’s philanthropic sister organization has worked to provide Association members with financial support to pursue education and professional development; to raise up and celebrate those who go above and beyond to serve their communities in school and out; and to fund research, education and other efforts to advance the school nutrition profession. Your financial donations to SNF, no matter how small, add up and become an investment in the future: your future, the future of your peers all across the country and the future of the children that all of you serve. You can support this future by donating to the SNF Annual Fund. The SNF Board has established a goal of $30,000 for the 2016 Annual Fund—but more important, it wants to see an increase in the number of SNA members who choose to make contributions to this campaign, who choose to be among those “Lighting the Way.” The list on pages 78-79 recognizes those who have given so far this year—will you add your name to this list before December 31? GIVING IS EASY HOW can you donate? Simply visit www.schoolnutrition.org/snf to make an online donation OR download a contribution form OR find links to state affiliate fundraising pages. Please call (301) 686-3100 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information about different Foundation donation opportunities. GIVING IS EASY WHEN should you make a donation to SNF? Any time is the right time! • You can donate on Giving Tuesday. This annual awareness campaign was established to piggyback on the rise of post-Thanksgiving retail-promotion campaigns (Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday) and encourage Americans to spend their hard-earned dollars on causes and not just things. This year, Giving Tuesday is November 29 and the Foundation is encouraging all SNA members to participate—and to promote their commitment to SNF by taking “unselfies” (self-portraits publicizing your support) and sharing these on social media with the #GivingTuesday hashtag. More details are available at http://schoolnutrition.org/GivingTuesday. • You can donate when making other end-of-the-year, tax-deductible charitable gifts. Some people pick one day or weekend in November or December to write checks to all their favorite non-profit organizations. Any contribution received and processed by December 31 is tax-deductible for 2016. • You can donate when attending an association conference or meeting. Almost every state in the country now has an official SNF ambassador who has eagerly embraced its mission and pledged to be its representative. (Visit http://tinyurl.com/SNFStateAmbassadors to view a list and find the representative for your state.) When SNA state affiliates meet specific dollar and/or percentage participation goals, the Foundation will make a portion of the funds donated by its members available to the state for scholarships for professional development and first-time conference attendance. Visit http://schoolnutrition.org/SNF/AnnualFund/2016StateIncentive to learn more about this opportunity and http://tinyurl.com/SNFStateFundraisingLinks for a PDF of specific state websites for SNF donations. • You can donate by maximizing tax advantages through planned gifts, such as your will, insurance plan or retirement plan. These don’t require any of your current assets and may make it possible for you to make a larger gift than you ever thought possible. Doing so will make you a member of the exclusive School Nutrition Legacy Circle. Visit http://schoolnutrition.org/SNF/GiftPlanning to learn more. • You can donate any time you are so moved to make a contribution. Visit http://schoolnutrition.org/SNF to donate online or download a contribution form. GIVING IS EASY WHY should you make a donation to SNF? Your Fund helps to support... • …Scholarships that give fellow SNA members access to educational and professional development opportunities that will help them build and expand strong school nutrition programs. • … Research that identifies best practices in school nutrition. • …Educational programs that provide tools, resources and technical assistance to school nutrition professionals at all levels working in districts of all sizes and socio-economic profiles. In addition, SNF works to raise the profile of school nutrition professionals who go far above and way beyond—in their association, their schools/districts and their communities. You’ll find many stories online and shared through social media. SNF also coordinates the School Nutrition Hero Award, now in its fourth year. Learn more at http://schoolnutrition.org/SNF/SpecialEvents. A survey from Network for Good asked those who make charitable donations to identify the top reasons why they support various non-profits with their hard-earned dollars: • I want to feel I’m changing someone’s life. • I want to memorialize someone who has died or honor someone who is making a difference. • I want to leave a legacy that perpetuates me, my ideals or my cause. • My faith teaches me to help others. • I feel fortunate and want to give something back. GIVING IS EASY WHO is eligible to donate? Anyone is eligible and everyone who is a member of SNA and a reader of School Nutrition is encouraged to support the work of the School Nutrition Foundation. If you’ve never donated to the Foundation before, please consider making your first contribution this year on Giving Tuesday, November 29. For each new gift that SNF receives this year, AccuTemp Products, Inc., will make an additional $20 donation to the Foundation. Your contribution will go even further! GIVING IS EASY WHAT should you give? No contribution is too small! SNF knows that budgets may be tight in your household. Give what you can give, whether that’s $1, $10, $100 or more. One idea: Each night before going to bed, transfer all your loose change to a jar. If you do this every evening between now and the end of December, you may be surprised at how it adds up! At the end of the year, donate the total amount to SNF. GIVING IS EASY WHERE can you find out more information? Visit http://schoolnutrition.org/snf for all you need to know about SNF, its programs and opportunities and ways you can contribute! OMG! (one more gift) Research shows that a majority of donors to charitable organizations admit that they under give. Is your name on the list of those who’ve already made SNF Annual Fund contributions in 2016? Thank you! Now, can you give a little more before the year is out? Remember, contributions are tax-deductible. Will this article be an OMG opportunity for you!?
