Adopt an Attitude of Profound Gratitude AS A NEW GRANDMOTHER, I FIND MYSELF AMAZED AS MY GRANDSON LITERALLY CHANGES EACH DAY BEFORE MY EYES. The development of his personality, his healthy growth, imagining his dreams—these are all wonders and blessings to our family. As school nutrition professionals, there are many similar blessings we count at this time of year. The smile of a child whose face lights up when you compliment her on making a healthy meal choice. The excitement of a youngster who shows you he has lost a tooth. The look of mild surprise and secret pleasure when you wish an older student a happy birthday—how did you know? These are just a few of the unique gifts we get to experience on a daily basis! So, when tasks leave us weary or someone or something has made us grumpy, we simply need to pause and reflect on such precious moments. We need to remember why we do this work: to nourish children, body and soul. Then, the blessings of being of service become clear. This month prompts us to reflect on our accomplishments and the blessings of collaboration. Our Board of Directors are leaders who work hard to ensure good decisions are made on behalf of all members, and as SNA President, I’m grateful for their commitment! I’m also thankful for our SNA staff who work tirelessly on behalf of our members. They are truly the best in the business. It’s also a blessing to be able to look forward, anticipating the opportunities that lay ahead. I’m excited about innovative work in ethics and procurement; exemplary education programs applying adult learning principles; advocacy efforts that build alliances; and public awareness activities that promote positive images of school nutrition. As we count our blessings, remain mindful of how we can give back. I encourage you to make a charitable gift to the School Nutrition Foundation Annual Fund. SNA’s philanthropic sister organization provides scholarships, education and research, and it counts on your support! And in giving back, let me give to you the words of the Irish blessing that is featured above. It’s my wish that these simple pleasures fill your spirit this season. “May you always have Walls for the winds, And a roof for the rain, And drinks beside the fire, Laughter to cheer you, And those you love near you, And all that your heart may desire.”
