By Dean Waite, publisher Soundings Trade Only Each year, our Corporate Profi les section features a boat that symbolizes the industry’s new and innovative course for improving the boating experience. This year, we are proud to show our readers the Sea Ray SLX 35 which sports triple Mercury Verado 300-hp engines and a wide variety of family-friendly standard features and options. Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), spoke at the Marine Dealer Conference and Exhibition (MDCE) in early December about the importance of appealing to an ever-growing marine marketplace that is going to be increasingly diverse. He focused on the Hispanic, African-American and Asian-American segments and offered interesting facts about why boat builders need to keep innovating to increase boating’s appeal to these specifi c groups. Trade Only has worked with the NMMA to “unpack” Hispanic market research that pointed to the increasing importance of family boating experiences. We have sponsored track sessions at IBEX and many more similar presentations given under the NMMA umbrella in recent times. At MDCE, Thom presented an impressive list of facts about diversity and its importance to boating’s growth in the near and far term. Here is a sample of some of the most salient items he mentioned, in case you missed the conference or our story about his presentation: s(ISPANICBUYINGPOWERISEXPECTEDTOREACH&#0e;TRILLIONBY

&#0e;FORTHEOVERALL5&#0e;3&#0e; With the incredible economic potential of these groups – which typically are underrepresented in boating − it is obvious that there is plenty of incentive for innovative boat builders to keep pushing the edge of the envelope toward new features to make our sport and lifestyle even more desirable to a wide range of individuals and families. On behalf of our Corporate Profi les companies that follow and our Outlook 2017 participants, also in this issue, we are all solidly committed to making the boating experience the best it can be by helping it to get easier, safer and more innovative all the time!
