The valiant efforts of School Lunch Heroes country-wide are applauded during a special day of festive appreciation. SCHOOL LUNCH SUPERHERO DAY SERVERS, ASSEMBLE! Each morning, school nutrition professionals rise to greet the day. To the untrained eye, they seem ordinary citizens, brushing their teeth, grabbing some coffee and heading to work, just like everyone else. But whether it is the bite of a genetically engineered spider, the touch of extra-terrestrial goo or continual exposure to the glee of well-fed children, once these individuals arrive at their school cafeterias in communities large and small, they transform into bona fide “school lunch heroes.” And while they accept the thanks and praise of a grateful nation at any time during the year, there is one special date, School Lunch Hero Day (SLHD), that is reserved especially for this purpose. The fifth annual celebration was observed May 5, 2017. These oft-unsung heroes owe this day to a collaborative effort between SNA and author Jarrett J. Krosoczka, whose titular Lunch Lady heroine battles through the pages of a series of graphic novels. Together with support from Random House Children’s Books, Krosoczka, SNA and Lunch Lady seek to raise awareness and fanfare for school nutrition staff, knowing full-well that beneath every apron and hair restraint is a supersuit, waiting to be unveiled. SLHD is the occasion for each cafeteria Diana Prince and Clark Kent to shine as the Wonder Women and Supermen that they are to the children and communities they serve. SNA received plenty of thrilling tales of staff embracing their not-so-secret super identities as they tackle the mighty deeds of K-12 cafeteria meal service. We also uncovered numerous heart-warming tales of well-deserved recognition for these unassuming champions of child nutrition. The photos spotlighted in this article are but a fraction of the many SLHD adventures recorded and reported from “Metropolis” to “Gotham City.” There are as many types of school nutrition professionals as there are superheroes in comic books. For each Iron Man, Black Canary, Wolverine and Bionic Woman, there’s a supervisor, site manager, line cook or cashier. They all act as guardians of the anatomy, helping kids to grow strong and succeed. They all serve as warriors against hunger, ensuring a nutrition safety net for children in disadvantaged households. No matter how you choose to honor the superheroes of your school meals operation, SNA looks forward to another year of super-sized school hero celebrations when SLHD returns on May 4, 2018. In the meantime, keep finding occasions to honor your team for all they accomplish day in and day out. Even when their capes aren’t in evidence, you know they are hunger- and obesity-busting heroes who deserve regular praise and recognition. Remember, School Nutrition always welcomes news about the inspiring members on your team and the creative events that occur in cafeterias and communities all around the country in the name of child nutrition. Send your stories and high-resolution photos via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. You might just find your heroes in the spotlight of an upcoming issue of SN! Now, as a new school year is upon you, take the inspiration found in these pages and follow the advice of Wonder Woman to “govern yourselves with love, kindness and service to others.”
