Flights are easy to almost anywhere in the world fromour major airports. Destinations from Hawaii to Mexico to Colorado and New Mexico all love Texans. I know because I ask. "Do you get Texans coming here?" I ask everywhere I go. A knowing smile comes across most faces. "Oh, yes," I usually hear. "We love Texans." We're known far and wide as a fun-loving folk, ready to try anything once, indulge in local cuisine, hoist a few pints of the local brew.We are thought of as friendly and fair, jovial and social, certainly not cheapskates. Yes, we Texans are coveted by tourismmarketers north and south, east and west. This summer is no different. As Mother Nature turns up the ther-mostat in our fair home state, many of us high tail it to cooler climes. Favorite driving destinations include the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado or the Gulf Shores of Alabama (where they swear there's no oil on the golf courses).Oneflight will land us in Maui or Cabo; aquickerflight innorthernFlorida a Huntsman Springs and destinations such as Sandestin. Spin the globe and the likelihood is you can get wherever it stops pretty easily fromone of our hub cities. Personally, I'mtemptedtotryacouplenewplacesthisyear.Factis,wesent writers to several destinations and asked them to report back with their findings. James Frank traveled to the Tryall Club, Jamaica, for us and came home having added it to his "top destinations visited" list. A property that counts among its early investors former Texas Governor John Connolly and Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Tryall Club'sgolfcoursearchitectofchoicewasanotherTexan,RalphPlummer.Anywhere with that many Texans involved can'tbeallbad,right? We also sent Jeff Shelley to Driggs, Idaho, to check out the new DavidMcLay Kidd-designed (Bandon Dunes, Castle Course at St. Andrews) course at Huntsman Springs. Though primarily a residential community, outside guests are welcomed to play the course if they rent a home on property. Since I enjoy fly-fishing almost as much as golf, and since Huntsman Springs is quite near the renowned Snake River, that idea appeals. But then again, another alluring Idaho destination we feature this issue is the Whitetail Club/Shore Lodge in McCall, right on the shores of Payette Lake, where water sports and an Andy North golf course await. Finally, editor George Fuller'sreportonMartisCampatLakeTahoe,withitsTom Fazio-designed golf layout and summer concert series in the high Sierra summer sound too good to pass up. Hmmm...where to go...what to do. I think I'll spin the globe and decide.
