Country Roads SILM Summer 2012 : Page 2
Publisher’s Letter “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby I hope this edition of Country Roads helps you make a few of your own spring and summer memories. Many of you have already started your gar-dens, and farmers are working hard to get crops in the field. My lilacs have been blooming profusely this spring, and hubby has helped me cover them to protect them from the frost a couple of times. Their scent fills the air, and all seems right with the world, until the sneezing begins. It seems that as you get older, allergies seem to kick up a notch. I’m afraid the blooms on the magnolia outside my kitchen window have frozen, and I won’t have the pleasure of walking into the house in the evening with their scent to welcome me home. We don’t have a huge vegetable garden any longer. I’ve only had a couple of tomato plants the past few years, but I miss it. Flowers have taken over, but I’ve not done well with those either. Somehow I have to find the time to pull those weeds and remember they need to be watered (the flowers, not the weeds.) G ood morning readers! I write this because I agreed to the task of taking back the space that I had relinquished to Liz many months ago. Liz has her hands full with a full-time job, kids and husband, as so many women do. We wish her well and are going to miss her. LAURA WELBORN PUBLISHER I remember a beautiful spider plant I had hanging in my kitchen, and my mom asked for a start. She was surprised when I told her she could have one, but I doubted if it would grow. When she asked why, I told her to look at it a little closer. She discovered it was a silk/fake plant. (Sorry, Mom. Shame on me for telling that story. I love you.) Summer brings everyone out to sit on their porches. It also kicks off festivals, garage sales and so many other great community events. It’s hard to choose which to attend, since you can’t make it to all of them. Be sure to check out the calendar of events, and let us of know of others happenings for future editions. We’d like to add them. And if you have any story suggestions, send them our way. Thanks for reading (if you made it this far.) Talk to you in the fall. Take care and enjoy your summer!
