Dear Readers, In the past decade, the oral healthcare arena has expanded exponentially—with new perspectives and theories, evidence-based research, improved technologies and materials, and innovative approaches to managing oral health. These advance- ments and discoveries are reaching a critical mass—we are witnessing significant changes in our role as oral healthcare providers. We have broadened our focus from simply treating diseases such as dental caries to incorporating a medical model of management. These changes include research on plaque biofilm and the oral- systemic connection, patient risk assessment, prevention and education strategies, and minimally invasive treatment protocols. Assessing the impact of these new methods on our day-to-day practice can be chal- lenging. By presenting examples of these emerging technologies and treatment options, Compendium hopes to provide opportunities for you to evaluate their potential significance for your practice and your patients’ oral health. As part of that educational effort, this special issue focuses on the use of resin infiltration to arrest caries lesion progression. The featured continuing education article, “Treatment Modalities for Caries Man- agement, Including a New Resin Infiltration System,” discusses changing standards of care and provides an informative overview of the current state of caries preven- tion, detection, and treatment initiatives. The article concludes with an explanation of how caries infiltration fits into the changing landscape of treatment options. The second article, “Caries Infiltration with Resins: A Novel Treatment Option for Interproximal Caries,” explores the background of this treatment technique and presents a stepwise guide to the clinical application.
