from the publisher Dear Readers, Prevention is key. That message has been emphasized so many times, in so many different situations, that it has almost lost its meaning. After all, it’s human nature to do only what’s necessary to get through our busy days. However, dental assistants—with the responsibility of not only providing patient care but also preserving coworkers’ health—know that maintaining these standards is critical. They live and breathe prevention. Of course, the best methods to prevent disease are constantly evolving. With new research emerging every day, the standards from only a few years ago are now obsolete. In addition, as this month’s continuing education article reminds us, the needs and capabilities of each dental office are unique: general guidelines must be adapted into practice-specific standard oper- ating procedures. In a clear, concise Q&A format, Environmental Surface Asepsis: Principles, Applications, and Issues covers what you need to know about disinfection in order to establish effective systems. Also in this issue, we are pleased to introduce the 2009 Dental Assistant of the Year:Mary Ellen Vaughn,CDA, RDA.As both an educator and advo- cate, she exemplifies the multiple roles and skills of today’s dental assis- tants. We’d like to thank Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals for its generous sponsorship of this award that recognizes the invaluable contributions of dental assistants.
