We at MARSHALLTOWN know that along with a good technical background and the attitude of a “craftsman,” your students need to train with the best. As students train with properly designed and balanced tools, they can measure their skill level performance--not the tool’s performance. A good tool becomes an extension; students using the right tools learn how to work with the tools. They achieve better results faster. Train with the BEST and save money. SkillsUSA SkillsUSA is a national organization serving high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations. For up to six hours, 53 young masons from 36 states competed at Bartle Hall in Kansas City, Mo. Each contestant, using block, brick and mortar, tried to construct the winning project by placing the masonry materials, according to plans, on a concrete block base. Student interest in masonry vocational training continues to be strong. This year, 34 high school and 19 post secondary / college contestants competed in two divisions. To qualify, the students had been winners, or designated second place fi nishers, of their own state contests. They competed against the clock and against themselves to demonstrate their expertise. The contest consisted of a written test and the construction of a brick and block composite project. The project for this year’s contest was designed by Bryan Light to test the skills needed for successful entry into the masonry profession. Trade professionals from Bricklayers Local #15 (MO/KS) and selected vocational instructors judged the projects by taking extensive measurements, measuring plumb at four locations, and judging fi nishing techniques and overall appearance. Masonry competitors were among more than 5,000 students who competed in 96 different career trade, technical and leadership fi elds. The contestants effectively demonstrated their expertise in the occupational skills required for such trades as electronics, technical drafting, precision machining, carpentry, plumbing and masonry. The SkillsUSA organization represents over 300,000 students and instructors in 54 state and territorial associations. The event is booked in Kansas City, Mo., through 2014. Marshalltown Company has implemented programs to aid instructors in getting the proper tools into the hands of their students. These programs are available to any instructors who use masonry, concrete, drywall/plastering, paint, tiling or archaeological tools in their classrooms. Student Award Program Created to recognize outstanding trowel trades students (secondary, post-secondary, and apprenticeship schools) each term for exemplary work: Marshalltown’s Student Award Program awards winners with a complimentary trowel. How the Program Works: MARSHALLTOWN awards students through Vo-Tech instructors. All materials are sent directly to the instructor, who then presents the award to the deserving student. Instructors, first, choose one student (one per school, per term*) who has excelled in the masonry, plastering, drywall, concrete, paint or tile trades. This student should be actively train-ing for a career in the “trowel trades.” Next nominate the student by sending us the student’s name and desired trowel (including type, size and pattern or part number, if known). Nominations may be sent in on either official school letterhead or on MARSHALLTOWN’s Student Award Nomination Form. Then, MARSHALLTOWN will send the following award materials to your attention: a letter of commendation, certificate of merit, complimentary trowel, and MARSHALLTOWN cap (one size fits all). *NOTE: Schools offering separate programs in more than one trade may nominate a student for each trade (brick, concrete, plastering, drywall, paint, or tile). Our objective with the Student Award Program is to give students the extra incentive to achieve superior results and instructors the means to reward work well done. MASONRY TOOLS
