Compendium Supplement Kuraray - September 2010 : Cover 2

CONTENTS Advancing Dental Adhesive Technology: Durability of Self-Etch Bonding Systems This special issue of Compendium of Continuing Education explores the devel-opment of dental adhesion technology and the features and applications of available bonding agents. As research progresses and new or improved prod-ucts become available, clinicians have more options—and a greater need for understanding the mechanisms that affect bond durability. To aid our readers in their evaluation, the continuing education article provides an in-depth review of available bonding agents: their components, characteristics, and clinical applications. Because certain factors can cause adhesives to be technique-sensitive, the author outlines the selection process for various clinical situations to increase predictability and long-term success. We are also pleased to include summaries of work from several distinguished researchers. The first article is a special contribution focusing on the critical devel-opments in dental adhesive technology in the last decade—and suggesting the next steps in the process. In addition to explaining the mechanisms of adhesive reaction, the second article provides a comprehensive literature review evaluating the bond strength of etch-and-rinse and self-etch systems. This information was originally presented at a meeting in San Francisco in November 2009. Also included in this issue are summaries of four panel discussions from the first annual Dental Adhesive Meeting (New York City, April 2009). The expert panelists included Hidehiko Sano, DDS, PhD; Naotake Akimoto, DMD, PhD; David S. Alleman, DDS; Jeffrey C. Hoos, DMD, FAGD; Marvin A. Fier, DDS, FASDA; and Randall G. Cohen, DDS. These key opinion lead-ers presented current research on bonding agent performance and engaged in stimulating discussions on the factors that affect success in adhesion. Additional information on their presentations, with supporting figures and graphs, is available online in an interactive PDF at http://www.kuraraydental. com/resources/01_technical_solutions_for_clearfil_adhesives.pdf.
