Provost Phil Gunter, VSU student James Croft, & President Patrick J. Schloss Valdosta Scholar — Momentum Inspiring Scholarship I am very proud to provide introductory comments for the fi rst issue of the Valdosta Scholar. No single publication more clearly illustrates our focus on the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge and creative works. The Valdosta Scholar confi rms our commitment to broad inquiry throughout and beyond our region. It highlights our role in enhancing the lives and livelihood of the students and citizens of the Southeast. It demonstrates that our teaching extends beyond the classroom, our research beyond the lab, and our creative activity beyond the studio or stage. Our greatest asset is an outstanding faculty. This issue features individuals who have focused on a broad array of intellectual pursuits including the study of accounting ethics, healthy lifestyles, pharmaceutical agents, and creative activities. They represent only a sample of the wonderful faculty who defi ne our institution and demonstrate a commitment to the “cauldron of ideas.” They are the reason that we are an asset to South Georgia and a model to the nation. Unlike any other school, VSU is gaining “momentum” in challenging economic times. Despite budget reductions, we are committed to the support of student and faculty scholarships. To this end, we continue to purchase cutting-edge scientifi c equipment, offer a liberal reassigned time program, and support nearly 300 graduate assistants. In all, our goal is to extend the student/faculty partnership in research and creative activity to a level never anticipated. In this inaugural issue, we provide a glimpse of the considerable scholarly activities that celebrate Valdosta State University as a community of scholars immersed in a culture of excellence. Sincerely, Patrick J. Schloss, President 2 | Valdosta Scholar
