Trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire leads a quintet of fine musicians on a journey through a decade that includes Kind of Blue and Birth of the Cool . As the jazz orchestra in residence at the Smithsonian Museum, the mission of SJMO is to play the greats as they intended to be played. Under the direction of NEA Jazz Master David N. Baker, this smoking band commemorates the giants and interprets new works in the style of the greats. “The best jazz repertory band in the country” – The New Yorker Tickets: $38 adult/36 senior/28 youth Chicago Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, 8 p.m. Latin big band rhythms melt winter’s chill during the 3rd annual Winter Jazz Fest. Founding members Darwin Noguera (piano) and Victor Garcia (trumpet) lead a talented group of Chicago musicians in a band that fuses Jazz with Afro-Latin American music. In the tradition of the Dizzy Gillespie United Nations Orchestra, CALJE honors the influence of the Latin sound on jazz while offering its own innovative and exciting contributions to the sound. Composers and bandleaders Noguera and Garcia will premiere a new work commissioned especially for Winter Jazz Fest 2012. “ … left everyone gasping and wanting more sounds after their near two hour, flawless set.” – Jazz Chicago Tickets: $32 adult/30 senior/22 youth Patricia Barber Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, 8 p.m. Ms. Barber is a favorite with audiences in downtown Chicago and in the cafes of France. She returns to the MAC with a mix of Green Mill favorites, including material from her recent Cole Porter CD.
