Jerry Franklin Drops the Puck at Hartford Wolf Pack's Salute to Heroes Night Jerry Franklin, president and CEO of the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN), dropped the puck at the Hartford Wolf Pack's Salute to Heroes Night on Saturday, February 28 at the XL Center in Hartford. This special game offered free admission to active-duty military personnel and veterans, and the Wolf Pack team members wore jerseys commemorating the 35th anniversary of the U.S.'s "Miracle on Ice" Olympic gold medal triumph. These jerseys were auctioned off to benefit the House of Heroes' Connecticut chapter. House of Heroes is an organization that provides no-cost home repair services to military and public service veterans and their families. Attendees at the game included members of the Veterans Vocational Training Program (VVTP). Part of CPBN's Institute for Advanced Media, the VVTP is a private occupational training school that allows adult learners, including veterans and their spouses and caregivers, to receive training from industry experts and gain 21st-century digital workforce skills. At the game, the Wolf Pack was defeated in overtime by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who won 3-2. CPBN's Made in Connecticut Initiative Now in Its Second Year In 2014, the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network announced the launch of Made in Connecticut, a multi-platform initiative designed to explore modern manufacturing and the role of innovation on companies that are located and thriving here in Connecticut. Now, in 2015, CPBN is pleased to announce that Year 2 of the initiative is underway, featuring even more special programs and reports highlighting local industry and American ingenuity. Tune in throughout the year as the award-winning WNPR news team produces new special reports highlighting local industry, and CPTV airs a variety of television programs showcasing manufacturing and innovation. For example, on April 7 and 14 at 10 p.m., CPTV will feature episodes of the PBS series Raw to Ready, which explores the science, innovation and sheer genius it takes to transform the most basic ingredients into powerhouse machines! Plus, special Made in Connecticut vignettes will air on both CPTV and CPTV Sports throughout the year. For more information on Made in Connecticut, visit MadeInCT.CPTV.org. WNPR Airs Special Reports From the Words to Give By Project Words to Give By, a partnership between the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and WNPR, is a community-wide storytelling project created to find, record and share stories of everyday generosity. In March, volunteers throughout the Greater Hartford region came forward to share their stories of acts of kindness, both large and small, that they had experienced in their lives. WNPR producers captured these moving stories — stories of neighbors helping neighbors, friends helping friends, and even strangers helping strangers. Now, WNPR listeners can tune in to be inspired by these stories. Starting this April and running through December of 2015, stories collected by Words to Give By will air on WNPR. Listen Wednesdays at 3:04 p.m. beginning April 29 for a new story each week. In addition, a new story will become available weekly to stream online at WordsToGiveBy.org. Tune in – or log on – to learn about the important everyday acts of kindness that typically go unheard.
