HANDS-ON MEETING

Helen Keller died a half century ago this year, and the LION remembers her with this archival photo of her and President Dwight Eisenhower at the White House in 1953. The brave general was brought to tears when Keller asked if she could “see him” and touched his face. Keller said, “I felt the courage and thought that carried him through such great years of the world’s history.” Keller’s triumph over her disabilities continues to resonate with people, especially children, says Sue Pilkilton, director of Ivy Green in Alabama, Keller’s birthplace. “They relate to the challenges she faced,” says Pilkilton. “And the temper tantrums [that Keller had as a child]—that’s something they also relate to.” Ivy Green has a new wonderful statue of Keller.
